Powertrain Options and Availability

Two engines were available in 1991 Escorts: a carryover 1.9-liter, rated at 88 horsepower; or in the GT, a Mazda dual-overhead-cam 1.8-liter (four valves per cylinder) that made 127 horses. Transmissions were supplied by Mazda: either a 5-speed stick or an optional 4-speed automatic. For 1996, the 1.9-liter engine gained platinum-tipped spark plugs. Ford issued an all-new Escort as an early '97 model.

Front Impact, Driver 4

Front Impact, Passenger 4

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's crashworthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

As a general rule of thumb, gasoline powered fuel injected engines will have an electrical fuel pump. This is also the case in your vehicle. There is no need for it to be timed, and with gasoline powered engines there is generally no need for it to be timed. The whole concept and idea of you timing it, would be more applicable with diesel engines, which do not have spark plugs and the air/fuel mixture is ignited by either the high engine compression, or in some cases and if so when the engine is cold by glow plugs. Lastly as a small tidbit of advice for everybody (seen it happen often enough) do not run a fuel injected engine on fumes as you can damage the electric fuel pump (the only thing that cools/lubricates the motor is the fuel that flows through it).
