water pump or fuel pump will sometimes have a ticking sound while idleing. Get a mechanics stethascope and put it to each one while car is running in idle. you'll hear it loud and clear....if so.....replace it..I've also heard ticking when my car was very low on oil...

dont forget folks that most all MB's have an odd unique clicking or knocking type sound when idling, even when new. I work at an MB dealer and hear this frequently, but you should have it checked to make sure its not a harmful sound.

My CL500 had a similar problem. Turned out the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Weird, but that's the magic of MB's.
